What are nutritive sweeteners ? Mention four types of nutritive sweeteners


Sweeteners that provide calories are termed as nutritive sweeteners. They should not exceed the level of maxium 25% of the total energy intake.
(i)                         Sucrose : This is a combination of glucose (50%) and Fructose (50%). It is often called or sugar beet juice. The products included are raw sugar, brown sugar, granulated sugar, confectioner's sugar and unrefined sugar.
(ii)                      Invert Sugar : This is the form of sucrose that is divided into its two components—glucose and fructose. It is sweeter than sucrose. It is mainly used in candies and caked products.
(iii)                   Corn syrup/Corn Sugar : This is a liquid combination of maltose, glucose and dextrose. It is used often in sodas, baked goods and canned foods.
(iv)                   Confectioner's/Powdered Sugar : This is finely gound sucrose sweetener.
